Chiropractic Treatments

MSK-Epic Chiropractic

Chiropractic is the largest global health care profession focused on neuromusculoskeletal (MSK) health, that is, the joints and muscles, and the nervous system that controls them. Chiropractors have a specialised approach to examination, diagnosis and treatment, based on best available research and clinical evidence with particular emphasis on the relationship between the spine and the nervous system.

Effectiveness, often allowing patients avoid drugs and/or surgery, and their potential side effects, and patient satisfaction, are two of the main factors that have prompted this health care profession to flourish and spread around the world, to become the world's third largest professional-degree health care discipline.

Chiropractors provide manual treatments, that is to say, by using their hands, utilizing procedures such as chiropractic adjustments, manipulation, soft-tissue therapy, and also take a holistic approach, emphasizing the body's self-healing ability, the mind-body relationship in health, and the patient's responsibility for their health through changes in lifestyle habits.

Chiropractors undergo a lengthy and rigorous course of training which is equivalent in duration and analogous in scope to basic medical or dental programmes, but with an emphasis on the musculoskeletal system and biomechanics - the application of physics principles to human movement. These courses are internationally accredited. The Chiropractic profession is recognized as the leader for manual healthcare by World Health Organisation. Chiropractic is a registered profession in many jurisdictions around the world. Chiropractic care is suitable for all age groups. Safety and effectiveness has been demonstrated in patients from infants to the elderly.

Sports Chiropractic-Epic Chiropractic

Discover the difference in your personal performance that many professional and elite amateur athletes have found with chiropractic.

Globally, many professional sports teams have chiropractors on their staff. Chiropractic has been included in the Polyclinic of major games around the world, such as the Olympic Games, World Games, Pan-American Games, All-Africa games, and has become a favourite among competitors as it has been shown to treat injuries effectively, aid in injury prevention and enhance performance.

The doctors at Epic Chiropractic Clinic focus on the complex relationship between nerves, muscles, and joints of the body and how this relates to overall function/performance. How the spine works (i.e., its biomechanics) can influence the nervous system and can alter the overall body behaviour. Abnormal peripheral joint function (knees, shoulders, elbows, etc.) can alter nervous system action and reduce performance.

Specifics of examination and correction of body mechanics, including the spine and peripheral joints, is the domain of the chiropractor. By ensuring proper mechanics of the spine and peripheral joints, a chiropractor can influence a number of body functions: from reducing the coefficient of friction at the joint surface level, to balancing and restoring normal muscle tone through soft tissue techniques, to proprioceptive retraining.

We are skilled in assessing athletic injuries with an emphasis on correcting and preventing musculo-skeletal injuries and biomechanical imbalances. Our clinical experience gives us a unique approach to treating athletes. We treat sport enthusiasts of all ages and abilities from local beginners and first time participants to international world-class athletes. Our expertise covers all athletic injuries and also common aches and pains experienced with everyday life.

Our approach and goals remain consistent for each of our patients:

Scoliosis-Epic Chiropractic

Scoliosis is defined as the presence of an abnormal lateral curve in the spine. Minor lateral curves develop as an adaptation to imbalances in body use such as handedness, pelvic unleveling or leg length imbalance. Curves up to 10 degrees are common and considered normal.

Of concern is Progressive Adolescent-Onset Idiopathic Scoliosis, which is a relatively common and possibly serious condition. It usually becomes obvious in the pre-teen or teen years.

The term idiopathic means its causes are not really understood. Unfortunately, it has received relatively little research attention over the years by medical science. Chiropractic research showing ability to reduce the degree of these curves is preliminary at best. What we do know is that this condition is familial (hereditary) and more prevalent in females than males. It is a multi-faceted illness effecting neurologic, metabolic and hormonal systems, but it is most evident in the classic spinal deformity that develops.

Chiropractic care for scoliosis patients in their growth years must therefore be part of a multi-faceted treatment approach, often in tandem with Orthopaedic Specilaists, which includes diet, exercise, chiropractic adjustments, therapy and sometimes bracing. Because progressive adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is not a mechanical disorder, chiropractic adjustments alone will not resolve this condition.

However, it should be noted that Chiropractic adjustments are an effective form of management for associated mechanical back pain that older scoliosis patients often experience.

Welness Cares-Epic Chiropractic

Chiropractic care has long been associated with wellness care.

The chiropractic principle is based on a functional entity called the "Vertebral Subluxation Complex". This is a condition where the malfunction of the spinal joints creates a malfunction of the nervous system, whereby the nervous system's ability to control and coordinate the different body processes, including motor control, sensation, and circulatory and autonomic regulation, is adversely affected. In layman's terms, the "subluxation" is when the spinal joints don't work causing the body's control system to go haywire, making it possible for all sorts body functions to not work properly.

The originator of Chiropractic, Dr. D. D. Palmer, wrote that "subluxations were caused by physical trauma, chemical toxicity, and psychological effects". Dr. Palmer was one of the first authors to recognize the importance of the Mind-Body connection.

Chiropractic adjustments may correct the spinal malfunction, but the chiropractor must also look at the patient holistically to determine where the trauma, toxicity and mental stress are coming from, and assist the patient in their avoidance.

Because of this principle, chiropractors believe that it is important for everyone to maintain a healthy spine with good spinal function. Periodic "maintenance" adjustments and regular spinal hygiene behaviours are recommended, much like your dentist expects periodic visits to maintain healthy teeth, as well as daily oral hygiene practices.

However, simply adjusting the spine over and over again cannot be considered wellness care without the chiropractor looking at a person's whole lifestyle, to identify the sources of the problem and its perpetuation, and assist the patient in eliminating them. The chiropractic adjustment is a powerful tool in providing wellness care, but it is only a part of the big picture of a healthy lifestyle.

Scoliosis-Epic Chiropractic

There are many case reports and some clinical trials that demonstrate chiropractic benefit with "Type O" or non-musculo-skeletal disorders.

Infantile colic and ear infections have been demonstrated to respond favorably compared to standard medical care.

Research has shown that many people undergoing chiropractic care for musculo-skeletal complaints also report other organ system benefits, with as many as 25-30% reported improvements in breathing problems, digestion, and circulation among others.
